Always get married in the morning. That way if it doesn’t work out, you haven’t wasted the whole day.
Mickey Rooney
How do you know if you are wasting time? Is the expenditure of the energy truly purposeful (authentic joy, required rest or renewal and genuine productivity qualify) or is it done out of boredom, restlessness, denial or procrastination? How do you feel? Does it feel like time well spent or life frittered away?
A moment well spent is enjoyable. How we spend the present moment alters our future. Happiness is a habit of thought, emotion, perception and interpretation. Happiness begets happiness and suffering begets suffering. Being happy is a learned skill and will atrophy without practice. Develop awareness about what you are practicing. If you are practicing suffering, you will get real good at suffering. Pursue happiness consciously and use happiness today to create and expand happiness tomorrow.
We all have regrets over past experiences. Regret isn’t a good feeling or time well spent. A better use of the present moment is to ask yourself if what you are currently doing or not doing will create regrets 5 years from now. Will you regret that you never wrote that book, took that vacation or dated that person who had shown interest in you? The risks we aren’t willing to take today sow the seeds of regret for tomorrow. We really don’t like change; we prefer the known to the unknown. Our resistance to change comes with a hefty price tag. We isolate ourselves from living. Everyday begins to feel like the day before and our existence is drained of its vitality. Regrets that are constantly replayed will sap energy and time will be wasted trying to understand with analysis and justify with rationalization. It takes a lot of energy to live a life of regret; no wonder that this can be a source of depression.
What you invest your time in defines who you are and how well you life is working. A poorly balanced life that doesn’t meet your needs is indicative of time poorly spent. The highly successful but desperately unhappy individual who works 100 hours a week needs to examine how his time (you can substitute the word life for time) is spent. Achieving the proper balance is a battle that is never won but always needs to be waged. I want a better balanced life. I spend too much time in my head and not enough time in my heart. My first line of defense is analysis and this stifles spontaneity.
After examining my life, I concluded that my time and effort would be well spent if the following areas of interest were properly addressed and attended to:
- Healthy, nurturing relationships with my wife, kids and grandchildren.
- Healthy life style.
- Sense of purpose and a feeling of accomplishment (that’s the real motivation for this blog).
- Quality friends who are nurturing and growing (no significant time invested in dysfunctional and superficial relationships).
- Travel. Kathy and I are committed to taking three major trips every two years. Right now we are focusing on Europe.
- Learning – fully engaging life, reading and limited, selective TV viewing.
Time is an non-renewable resource and must be used wisely

Hey Riley. Its taken a long time, but I am slowly coming to realise just how much my happiness is a choice, that I can incline my mind to joy and choose to take something positive from each day . I really appreciated what you said here “If you are practicing suffering, you will get real good at suffering. Pursue happiness consciously and use happiness today to create and expand happiness tomorrow.”
Goodness as always

Hey Stracey,
Well the positive psych folks say that level of happiness is 60% genetic (some people are just born happier than others), a small percentage for circumstances and the rest we have control over. I married to one of those naturally happy people (it’s like being a natural or gifted athlete), others (like me) can’t leave it to chance and have to work at it. That being said, I agree that happiness is a choice and is a skill that can be learned.

Hi Riley
I knew that if I didn’t come to Canada for at least 6 months, while I could afford it, while I didn’t have to work, and as soon as the children were living independantly, I would regret it. I didn’t want to live with that regret.
Since being in Canada, my husband, Steve, and I have loved, lived, laughed so much together. We are completely relaxed and appreciating each other and what we are doing and where we are going.
Was it uncomfortable for me to make the decision? Oh yes. It meant leaving family, friends and commitments. However, as you say, to live in regret takes up too much energy! Family, friends will be there when we get back. New commitments will come along.
I’m enjoying the summer Riley

Kate,
It will be interesting to see how much the Canadian experience carries over when you return home. Kathy and I love to travel not just for the enjoyment but because it broadens our vision as to what’s possible and also makes us more confident individuals.

Time is so precious that everyone must not dare waste it. Making early decisions is always an advantage. You’ll never know if things will actually work out for you, so, better make things early so that you will still have time for recovering back if things fail.

Hi Riley,
Thank you for another great post. “How do I want to spend my time, doing what?” is in my opinion one the most important questions in life (if not the most important). Great life can be built based on this question alone. Add high self-esteem, unstoppable mindset and you are an effective human being.
Your blog is my favorite in personal development niche, because it goes deeper than many other blogs out there.
Many happy days to you Riley.

Hey Derek,

Riley, I love the title of this article! I also concur with idea of forecasting into the future to get a glimpse of today from that different perspective. It’s something I often do to see things more clearly. This line: ” A better use of the present moment is to ask yourself if what you are currently doing or not doing will create regrets 5 years from now. ” Aw Doppelganger! I’m blogging about that today too! Sort of! LOL What a surprise! And I promise, it was written yesterday, same day this one was published – only BEFORE this was published! Augh!:o ((Honestly – I wrote it on the 12th – shortest time between writing and publishing in the history of LFI!)
I like your list too. Selective TV viewing – so what do you watch? Sit coms, educational programs? Movies?

As a high school teacher, I am constantly trying to get my kids to think longer term. I love this article, Riley! I especially liked this thought: “A better use of the present moment is to ask yourself if what you are currently doing or not doing will create regrets 5 years from now.” This just might become required reading for them starting this September.
There is great happiness to be had in the moment, but a great forfeiture of happiness if the moment is present without thought to how it will affect the future.
Great post, my friend!

I used to be involved with a charter school that worked with high school kids who had difficulty functioning in a traditional school setting. Hi Riley,
You’ve hit on my biggest challenge: balance. I’ve always struggled with it. Even now, when I refuse to spend my time on anything that doesn’t feel good or doesn’t serve me, I get so caught up in projects that I tend to drop everything else. And when I do seem to get the mix right, by watching all my different “pots” at the same time, I feel like I’m not moving forward as quickly as I’d like (momentum in one thing = fast, momentum spread out over several things = slow). It’s a continuous dilemma. But your post made me feel really good about one thing: I don’t waste any time. I relax, sure, but that’s deliberate. So, thanks a huge bunch for that.
Hugs,
Melody

Melody,
We must be twins separated at birth. Whenever I’m in a good book everything else gets kicked to the curb. I see selfishness as a virtue; when I give back to society, I’m really doing it primarily for myself – it makes my life work better and it feels good. I’m not sure that you are too far off base when you to you refuse to spend your time on anything that doesn’t feel good or serve you. Of course immediate gratification isn’t always in one’s best interest.

Hey Riley, I can always pull something prophetic from your posts and you had several in this one. However, ‘I spend too much time in my head and not enough time in my heart’, really stuck w/ me and it’s so true. We really do need to spend more time being fully in the moment and enjoying those around us.
Living a purposeful, happy life is a healthy life indeed.

Wow, Riley, you sure do like to make me think, lol! And that’s a good thing.
This is a subject that I find fascinating. It’s difficult finding a balance between working towards a goal and making sure you don’t burn out. I’m so glad you and Kathy are making travel a priority. Not enough people take advantage of seeing the world.
I’m what people would call a naturally happy person, perhaps from genetics (my father is that way too) and perhaps from surviving rough times and learning to really appreciate the good times.
I really had to examine my priorities when I decided to leave my job to be a stay at home mom. My oldest was a very fussy baby who didn’t sleep well at night. It would have been much easier for me to go back to work and not accept the challenge of being a stay at home mom. But I didn’t have a lot of years with my mother before she died so I wanted to make sure I had as much time with my daughter as possible.
I know staying at home isn’t right for everyone, but it was the right choice for me.
Thanks so much for making me think again! Well done, Riley!

Speaking of happiness, when I was in grade two I overheard my mother saying how the girl across the road had a nice easy smile, and so today I smile easily. I would like to think that along the way I was also practising happiness.
A few years ago I came across the idea that I have been wasting my time on activity, unconsciously on purpose, if after ending my activity I feel hollow. I would like to think I’m getting better at quickly ending hollow activities.
I still don’t know what to think of something Abe Lincoln said, “Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.”

Hi Sean,
You are blessed if you smile easily. We all appreciate a genuine smile. I think the question or challenge is to be as happy as you are capable of being. Lincoln who battled depression all his life and suffered many personal tragedies soldiered on as best he could. Hope you are having a good summer Sean.

Hi Riley,
I think it’s ok to keep some sameness in our lives as long as we do something new every week or two.
Eventually we can do something new daily while still having some of our regular comforts in our lives.
Our time is much more valuable than gold to me. It is gold actually even though we haven’t been conditioned to treat it as such.
Justin@Coaching recently posted..How To Make Unsafe Decisions & Soar
Hey Justin,
I guess one needs to balance sameness (which is always comforting) with the need for new which is where growth occurs. How is business? The personal growth market is a highly competitive one; it’s a tough one in which to try to make a living.

Ah, another great post from you Riley. I 100% agree with you, happiness is a choice. I have learned this valuable lesson over the years. I choose not to let others drag me down with their pettiness, with their negativity and with their uncertainty. Nope, I choose to be happy and I love every minute of every day.
Regrets! I use to look back and have regrets but since that time I like to look at it as life lessons. Had I not done what I did, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Good or bad, I’m here. I’ve done the best I can to live my life to the fullest so at this time I can honestly say I have no regrets. Nope, can’t think of a one. Give me enough time and I just might though!
Thanks again for always giving me something to really think about. I always enjoy coming over here to your place.

So true Riley. Before you know it…you can find yourself spinning in circles and not really enjoying the time that is here and now. I have been learning to live life fully through the things that make my heart go pitter patter. Like writing, painting, and anything else my heart can feel to CREATE. Living like this make life so much more vibrant and full of life for me no matter what is going on around me.

Well said, Riley. One cannot kill time without injuring one’s eternity. If we are not awake, aware and participating fully in life we might as well be living in a dream — it is not real life! People who are creating and expressing themselves authentically never have time for petty vices and distractions.
It is a well known fact that if we really need to do something, then it is always possible to find some time to do that. So time management is not difficult but we really need some self determination. This a great article for everyone.
As they say, time is gold so it should be spent wisely. I do agree that one way to avoid wasting your time is living a balanced life. It’s like time management, you allocate time to be spent with your family and friends, working without any distraction and treating yourself by taking a day off. Thanks for sharing!
